Scott Justus, Executive Chef at Sonny's Astoria, brings a lifetime of culinary inspiration and experience to the kitchen. Growing up in a split family with humble means, Scott's passion for food was nurtured by both parents in unique ways. His father cultivated fresh vegetables and brought home fish and game from hunting and fishing trips. At the same time, his mother, a single parent, focused on quick, flavorful meals inspired by her upbringing on the family farm in a family of 9 other brothers and sisters.
From an early age, Scott found joy in experimenting with recipes alongside his dad, perfecting dishes to impress friends at backyard cookouts and catfish fries on the banks of Lake Palestine. Here, his love for smoking meats and vegetables took root, inspired by the unforgettable Thanksgiving turkey they once smoked together. Both parents instilled a deep appreciation for scratch-made food through their pickling, jam-making, and devotion to homegrown ingredients.
Scottās culinary journey expanded in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was immersed in the vibrant, diverse food culture. From savoring meals at humble food carts with lines out the door to dining at the iconic kitchen table of Chez Panisse, Scott's palate was shaped by world-class cuisine and bold global flavors. His international travels have further refined his passion for crafting high-quality, scratch-made dishes with a unique international twist.
Inspired by the philosophy of James Beard's mother, Scott strives to create fresh, wholesome, and deeply satisfying dishes. At Sonny's Astoria, his love for food and dedication to excellence shines through in every bite, elevating the cafe into a true foodie destination. Whether it's a smoked dish that recalls his Texas roots or an inventive take on classic comfort food, Scott's creations are steeped in a rich legacy of flavor, love, and culinary curiosity.
The name "Sonny's Astoria" embodies the warmth and positivity that Scott brings to his cooking and the restaurantās atmosphere. "Sonny" represents a sunny, smile-filled mentality that Sonnyās team strives to share with all our guests, paired with a nod to Sonny Malone, Kira's love interest in the beloved film Xanadu, and the Robin Williams interview with Dame Edna (pictured below). This playful inspiration reflects the joy and creativity defining the restaurant and its welcoming spirit.

We use only the freshest, quality ingredients like Shepards Grain NAPOLETANA "00" Pizza Flour, Grande Cheese, and San Marzano tomatoes to make our pizza.
